SPENCER — Playing in the first round of the NVC Girls Basketball Tournament, Elgin Public Pope John had no trouble with Niobrara/Verdigre, posting a 40 to 23 victory.
The Wolfpack, who have prided themselves on shutting down opponents, once again put the defensive pressure on Niobrara/Verdigre. In the first 16 minutes of the game, the Wolfpack held their opponent to just seven points.
Altogether, in three of the four quarters, Niobrara/Verdigre was held to single-digit scoring.
Leading 16 to 7 to start the third quarter, the Wolfpack pulled away by outscoring their opponent 24 to 16.
Leading the scoring parade was Chelsi Mescher who had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Jessica Heithoff showed her defensive prowess with 12 steals in the game.
Niobrara/Verdigre (6-12) was led in scoring by Brianna Hamilton with eight points.
The victory boosted the Wolfpack’s record to 9-8 heading into a second round showdown against West Boyd.
