City to explore how to disperse ED funds

Two women, looking to establish a new business in Elgin, asked the Elgin City Council last week about the availability of funds for economic development.

Kara Funk and Shay Dirks asked the council about the process for receiving funds set aside through the city sales tax to be used for economic development.

Years ago in 2004, when a city sales tax was approved by voters, a small percentage (five percent) of the funds collected was to be designated for economic development. Mayor Mike Schmitt said those funds have been set aside each year, but the process by where they could be made available has never been created.
