Josephine Metz

1918 – 2010

Josephine M. Metz (Meis), 91, died Friday July 16, 2010 in her home in Chester Springs, PA. The beloved wife of Alfred C. Metz, Jr. for 58 years, Josephine was born in Elgin, Nebraska on August 29, 1918.

She attended Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, NE. She taught school in a one room school house on the prairie. 

She moved to Washington, D.C. and worked for the FBI during World War II. 

After the War she moved back to the Midwest where she married Alfred Metz and became a homemaker and mother to two children. 

Moves took the family to Prairie Village, KS, Birmingham, MI; Stanford, CT; Valley Forge, PA; Great Falls, VA; and finally Chester Springs, PA. 

She was an avid gardener and cook as well as an accomplished artist. While living in the Valley Forge area she was the first President of Main Line Meals On Wheels. 

In Great Falls, VA she was active in Republican politics.

Josephine is survived by her husband Alfred C. Metz Jr., her children Steven Metz (Leah Herrin) of Georgia; and Denise M. McGovern (Michael) of Spring City, PA; two grandchildren Zoe Metz and Christina McGovern; a sister, Mary Sprout of Minnesota; a brother, Thomas Meis of Arizona, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

The Funeral Mass was held on Thursday, July 21, 2010 at 10:30 am at St Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church at Rt 100 and Fellowship Road in Chester Springs. 

Burial was at All Souls Cemetery in Coatesville, PA.
