EWING — On paper, the game was a mismatch. On the court, it was even more so Friday night at Elgin Public-Pope John defeated the Ewing Tigers in boys NVC basketball action.
Scoring at will against the over-matched Tigers, the Wolfpack (7-7) opened up a 38 to 7 lead at halftime and coasted the rest of the way to the victory, their seventh of the season.
The Wolfpack started the game scoring the first 13 points. Senior Seth Schumacher had seven points including a trey and Kyle Kallhoff added four.
Ewing got on the scoreboard with 3:32 left in the quarter on a two-pointer by Bryce Summers.
The Wolfpack then went on an 11 to 0 run over the next four minutes to seize control of the game. Austin Meis had four points, Chad Bode added two and Schumacher drained a trey.
After another basket by Summers, the Wolfpack closed out the first half with a 14 to 0 run as the Wolfpack took advantage of matchups to score inside and outside. Schumacher’s third trey of the half concluded the Wolfpack onslaught. Ewing’s Trevor Brummels had the Tigers’ final three points of the half on a trey.
Up by 31 points to start the second half, the Wolfpack kept up their torrid scoring pace as Schumacher scored from the outside while Meis and Bode were able to get easy baskets on the inside. A two-pointer by Ashton Evans late in the quarter gave the Wolfpack a 52 to nine lead. The clock continuously ran in the fourth quarter as Wolfpack reserves finished up the game. Liam Heithoff and Kyle Schumacher accounted for the Wolfpack’s fourth quarter points.
For the game the Wolfpack made 25 of 47 shots from the field and sevenof 15 free throws.
Meis and Seth Schumacher tied for the team high in rebounds with five apiece. Seth Schumacher led the Wolfpack in assists with four. He, Meis and Evans each had two steals.
