The Petersburg Community Club is planning to host their 12th annual Punkin’ Chunkin’TM event on Sunday, Oct. 25, starting at 1 p.m.
This date is still tentative, depending on weather, harvest and field conditions. Those interested in coming should check the Petersburg Community Club’s Facebook page, www.albion-newsonline.com or Nebraska Tourism website for information, or call 402-843-0102 or 402-843-8658 for updates on the event. In case the event is postponed, the date will be the following Sunday, Nov. 1.
Petersburg Community Club’s Punkin’ Chunkin’TM is held in conjunction with the World Championship Punkin’ Chunkin’TM Association. Punkin’ shooter winners in the local contest are eligible to compete in the national competition.
Machines can shoot, launch, throw or fling a 6-12 lb. pumpkin. Community volunteers or club members drive four wheelers through the corn or soybean fields and measure distance shot by a Global Positioning System (GPS). The longest distance shot so far is 3,930 feet.
Participants can use an air gun, trebuchet, catapult or slingshot to shoot pumpkins. A chance to win up to $500 for accuracy is donated by the Great Plains State Bank (formerly Petersburg State Bank). Participants are reminded that there is no entry fee, but explosives are prohibited.
Highlighting the event will be the fourth annual outhouse races. There will be a new course and new challenges. Winner is eligible to participate in the international championship.
Watch for signs showing location.
Miss Nebraska Alyssa Howell will be signing autographs from 1 to 3 p.m.
There is free admission and many kids activities (petting zoo, launching contest, treasure hunt and obstacle course) and other events to entertain all ages during the afternoon.
