Just as he told The Elgin Review months ago he would do, District #5 Antelope County Commissioner Keith Heithoff has submitted a letter of resignation.
Heithoff, a rural Elgin resident, will step down from the position effective February 14, 2024.
He had announced his intention in September to remove himself from elective office because of plans to relocate to Arkansas.
Antelope Councy Clerk Lisa Payne has been in touch with the Nebraska Secretary of State’s office on the proper procedure for filling the remainder of Heithoff’s term in office.
One scenario which has been followed in the past is for the county clerk to accept letters of application from persons in the district showing interest in the position, interviews open to the public would be conducted before the remaining commissioners on the board would vote for the person to fill the position.
The process for filling the position will take place in 2024 likely after Heithoff leaves office, Payne said.
“I have enjoyed my time on the board and am honored to have served the people of Antelope County,” Heithoff said in his resignation letter. He then wished everyone ‘Merry Christmas’ and all the best in 2024.
Heithoff, a Republican, was elected to the county board of commissioners in November 2022.
He has served as vice chairman since taking the oath of office in January 2023..
