ELGIN — Possessing a one-point lead midway through the third quarter, Elgin couldn’t hold onto the lead and saw their dream of a state championship crumble at the hands of the Humphrey St. Francis Flyers Saturday night.
The Flyers scored the last 24 points of the game to win 52 to 29 to advance to the state championship game Thursday where they will play Ewing, a team the Eagles defeated in October.
Against the Flyers, the Eagles and their fans felt every emotion from jubilation early in the game to the realization late in the game that there would be no trip to Lincoln for a championship game.
Humphrey was defeated in the Championship game by Ewing.
