This week marks a milestone for Elizabeth (Lizzie) Freese of Elgin.
On Saturday, Sept. 10, she will turn 100 years old.
One day later, on Sunday, her family will hold an open house in her honor at the Elgin Community Center from 2 to 4 p.m.
Last week, in her home, she reflected on her life and the many changes that have taken place.

Her parents were immigrants from Germany, meeting and marrying in the United States and later setting up home near Lindsay, NE. In 1910, one year before her birth, the family moved to Elgin on a train. She was born in 1911 on a farm near Elgin, number eight of ten children born to Frederick Sr. and Cecelia (Kuhl) Kerkman. She had six brothers and three sisters. Lizzie is the only sibling living.
Reflecting on her early years, she remembered growing up in a home where German was spoken much more than any English. In fact, German was all she knew until she began to attend school at St. Boniface in Elgin.
