It was a great day for Pope John at District Music Contest last Friday. Their two large groups, the Women’s Chorus and the Vocal Jazz Choir, both received superiors and plaques by virtue of getting a “1” rating from all three judges.
“The judging was tough, and what made it even more difficult, our eighteen solos and small groups performed in a two hour window from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. with no time to warm up or practice between numbers,” said Pope John instructor Patricia Miller.
“The judges were very complimentary in their praise of our students. We even received perfect scores from one of the judges, with one of the best rating sheets I’ve ever seen in all my years of teaching.”
The following received superior ratings on their vocal solos: Sarah Starman, Carey Eischeid, Natalie Beckman, Olivia Borer, Arielle Kerkman, Jill Moser. Clara Kopiez received a superior on her piano solo; Superior ratings were also received by the Triple Trio and Mixed Sextet.
The Triple Trio included Mindy Beckman, Olivia Borer, Carey Eischeid, Samantha Heithoff, Arielle Kerkman, Clara Kopiez, Maria Olnes, Morgan Pelster, and Sarah Starman.
The Mixed Sextet featured Kix Payne, Tyler Childers, Morgan Pelster, Arielle Kerkman, Olivia Borer, and Mindy Beckman.
Receiving excellent ratings were the vocal solos of Maria Olnes, Morgan Pelster, Maddie Schiltmeyer, Devon Baum and Jenny Beckman; the freshman Triple Trio, a Vocal duet and a Trio.
A second Vocal Duet received a good rating.
The students will be featured at Pope John’s Spring Concert, Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. in St. Boniface Gym.
