We’re Now the Red, Black & Silver Wolfpack

Students Choose, Boards Ratify Colors, Mascot for Sports Co-op for Elgin-Pope John

The students have spoken and the school boards have approved new colors and a mascot for the sports co-operative between Elgin Public and Pope John Central Catholic Schools.

At Monday night’s meeting of the District #18 Board of Education, results were announced from elections held at both schools to determine colors and a mascot for the winter and spring varsity sports teams.

Students in grades 7-11 at both schools overwhelmingly supported new school colors of red and black with a silver accent color. Altogether, 167 students at the two schools voted. Of that number, the highest vote total was 49 for the afore-mentioned colors.

The new mascot will be … Wolfpack. The mascot received 68 votes. The second highest total was 26 for Wolves, coming in third was Wolverines with 24 votes. Other possible mascot choices were mustangs, pirates, lancers, gladiators, thunder, raptors and spartans. As was the case with colors, the mascot names were selected by the student body of both schools to vote on.
