Ord Elementary Principal Hired as District #18 Superintendent

Just hours after being interviewed, Steve Dennis learned he had achieved a professional goal of his — becoming a K-12 school superintendent.

Dennis was offered and he accepted the position Thursday night, wrapping up a week which saw the District #18 Board of Education interview two candidates for the position currently held by Interim Superintendent Lee Hall. Also interviewed but passed over for Dennis was Jeffrey Walburn, superintendent at Silver Lake Public School.

Board President Steve Heithoff said Friday Dennis has verbally accepted an offer for a two-year contract. Heithoff said the salary will be set after the Ord School District accepts Dennis’ resignation which, the board president said, he doesn’t foresee as a problem.

As has been the case with compensation, Heithoff said the new superintendent will receive family health/dental coverage as well as a disability package as part of his compensation.

Dennis was interviewed Thursday afternoon. The formal question & answer session, a series of questions prepared for District #18 by the Nebraska Association of School Boards, was concluded in slightly under an hour. After some follow-up questions, Dennis left and the school board went into closed session to evaluate Dennis’ interview and qualifications, and to also work on a new superintendent’s contract.
