Golf Carts Now Legal On City Streets

Elgin residents may soon notice more golf carts driving on city streets.
Suspending the mandatory three readings, the Elgin City Council Monday night approved Ordinance #640 to allow golf carts to be used on city streets.
Golf carts can be driven across state highways, but are NOT allowed to operate on state highways.
Earlier this year, the Nebraska Legislature passed LB570 which allows communities to pass an ordinance to allow golf carts to be used on city streets between the hours of sunrise to sunset. Restrictions are that the golf carts travel no more than 30 miles per hour; all drivers must have an operator’s license and proof of financial responsibility.
