HUMPHREY — Undefeated Humphrey St. Francis showed why they are a good bet for the state football playoffs, defeating Elgin Public-Pope John 60 to 0 Friday evening.
Playing on Field Turf for the first time this season, the Wolfpack’s offensive struggles continued as, for the second week in a row, they failed to score in the game.
The Flyers’ defense shutdown the Wolfpack’s offense, limiting EPPJ to just 18 yards of total offense in the game. Yet, despite the lopsided score on the scoreboard, the Wolfpack did have moments when they gave their fans in the stands plenty to cheer about. Among them were:
• R.J. Lierman’s kickoff return of 33 yards in the second half. The 130-pound senior came close to breaking away. He set up the Wolfpack in great field position. However, they failed to gain a first down and punted the ball back to the Flyers.
• Five Wolfpack players (Austin Bauer, Adam Dreger, Kyle Schumacher, Cory Romej and Layne Bullock), recorded 10 or more tackles in the game.
As for the Flyers, they capitalized on big plays in the first half to jump out to a 54 to 0 lead. Quarterback Trevor Pfeifer tossed two touchdown passes and Taylor Wemhoff returned a punt for one score and had a 59-yard touchdown run.
The loss dropped the Wolf-pack’s record to 1-5 heading into a Friday night showdown against Osmond (4-2).
Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. at Elgin Field as part of Home-coming Week.
