ELGIN — When Riverside, Nebraska Christian and EPPJ play a triangular, the matches are intense. Such was the case again Thursday night as the Wolfpack swept Nebraska Christian, then saw Riverside sweep EPPJ in the finale.
Nebraska Christian kept pace with the Wolfpack early in the first set. Tied at 14-all, EPPJ capitalized on three ace serves from Gentry Zwingman to take a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way to win 25 to 19. In Set #2, EPPJ jumped out to a 24 to 12 lead. The Eagles scored five consecutive points before EPPJ closed out the match.
Jael Lammers and Mady Kurpgeweit led a balanced attack with five kills apiece. Zwingman had four ace serves. Lillian Moser and Kurpgeweit each had two solo blocks.
Loss to Riverside
Against the Chargers, EPPJ started out strong and led nine to three when Kurpgeweit went down with an ankle injury. She did not return to action, watching much of the match from a spot near the bench.
Riverside fought back to tie the score at 18-all. The teams exchanged points. An ace tip by Lammers gave EPPJ a chance to win the set. Riverside fought back to tie the score at 24-all, then won the next two points to close out the set.
