ELGIN — Trailing by just one point at halftime, Elgin Public-Pope John couldn’t get the shots to fall in the second half and lost to Boyd County 78 to 66 Saturday night.
In one of the highest scoring games in recent memory for girls basketball, the Spartans and Wolfpack earned the praise of all fans as many stood and applauded both teams’ effort at the conclusion of the game.
Trailing 36 to 35 to start the second half, Boyd County took advantage of the hot shooting of Hannah Sobotka and McKenna Rossmeier to build an 11-point lead (55 to 44) midway through the quarter.
Then, the Wolfpack made a run of their own. A two-pointer by Nicole Beckman followed seconds later by another from Chelsi Mescher cut the lead to seven points.
