Bravettes, Cards surprise EPPJ

BATTLE CREEK — The Wolfpack volleyball team have ‘owned’ Boone Central in recent years. But such wasn’t the case Thursday night as the Cardinals swept EPPJ in a triangular played at Battle Creek High School.

Behind 14 kills from senior Addy Hedlund, the Cardinals defeated EPPJ 25-18 and 25-21.

Trailing 17 to 16 in the first set, Boone Central pulled away with a eight to two run to end the set.

The second set was tied at 19-all before the Cardinals again pulled away to win with a six-to-two run.

The Wolfpack managed just 19 kills in the match, led by Braelyn Martinsen with eight, Jael Lammers had seven. 

On defense, Lammers, Lillian Moser and Tenley Schindler each had one solo block.

Elizabeth Moser recorded 16 set assists in the match. E. Moser, along with Brooke Kinney and Gentry Zwingman each had nine digs. Zwingman led in serve receive with 19.

In the last match of the night, EPPJ started strong by winning the first set, then dropped the last two to Battle Creek to lose the match 25-23, 18-25 and 22-25.

In the third set, E. Moser recorded back-to-back ace serves which cut the Bravettes lead to 21-19 as Battle Creek called a timeout. The teams traded points before L. Moser put down a kill to cut the lead down to two, 24 to 22. Battle Creek then won the final point to claim the match.

Lammers led hitters with 12 kills on 48 swings, Martinsen had eight and L. Moser had six. E. Moser posted 28 set assists in the match.

EPPJ had seven ace serves in the match, Martinsen had four, E. Moser had two and Sophia Burke added one. Martinsen had 18 digs in the match, one more than E. Moser. 

Zwingman led the team in serve receive with 19, Brooke Kinney had 16.
